What Are Tights?
Tights are different from leggings and are usually considered part of your underwear rather than an item of clothing.
For one, they’re usually much more opaque (even thicker tights will usually have some degree of see-through). It’s worth noting that tights come with different degrees of opaqueness, often identified as the “denier” of the tights. While underwear with a very thin denier is often referred to as “pantyhose”, the term “tights” usually refers to a thicker stocking. And of course tights encapsulate your feet too.
Concealment
Tights can be used to conceal any blemishes or scars on your legs. They can also be used to cover tattoos making them a great option for professional settings.
Protection from the Elements
During colder seasons, tights act as an extra layer of insulation, keeping your legs warm and protected from harsh weather conditions. They also provide a barrier against harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of sunburn and skin damage.
Versatile Fashion Statement
Tights come in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and styles, allowing you to express your personal style and enhance your outfits. Whether you prefer classic black tights or bold, vibrant ones, they can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any ensemble.
Confidence Boost
Wearing tights can boost your confidence by providing a smooth and streamlined appearance. They can help shape and contour your legs, giving you a more toned and defined look. This can be particularly beneficial when wearing form-fitting clothing or attending special events.
Added Support and Stability
Tights offer support to your muscles and joints, especially in the legs and lower body. The compression provided by tights can help reduce muscle vibrations during physical activities, leading to improved stability and performance.
Types of Tights
Description and Usage: Sheer tights are perfect for formal events or situations where you want to add a polished touch to your outfit. They come in various shades to match your skin tone. Quality Indicators: Look for an even weave and a soft, yet sturdy, feel. Double-covered spandex can enhance durability.
Description and Usage: Opaque tights offer more coverage and are generally worn in casual settings or colder climates. Quality Indicators: High-quality opaque tights will have a consistent color and dense weave. Check for a blend of materials like nylon and spandex for stretch and durability.
Description and Usage: These tights feature various patterns or textures and can be a fun addition to your wardrobe. Quality Indicators: The pattern should be consistent, and the material should feel robust but not itchy.
Description and Usage: Footless tights are essentially leggings and are versatile enough for various outfits. Quality Indicators: Good footless tights are made from thick, durable materials and feature a strong, elastic waistband.
Description and Usage: Specialty tights serve specific purposes, such as providing additional warmth or aiding in blood circulation. Quality Indicators: For compression tights, look for medical-grade compression ratings. For fleece-lined tights, the inner lining should be plush but not overly bulky.
Beyond their practical and comfortable aspects, tights and leggings have many advantages that enhance your silhouette and style. Here are some good reasons to wear them every day:
To refine and lengthen your legs: Thanks to their sheathing and sculpting effect, tights and leggings stretch and erase small imperfections, rebalancing proportions. As a result, your legs appear slimmer and longer in the blink of an eye!
To feminize an outfit: Paired with a skirt, dress, or even shorts, tights and leggings add a feminine and glamorous touch to your look. You can play with materials (lace, fishnet, velvet, etc.) and colors to create original and trendy outfits.
To keep warm in winter: When temperatures drop, wearing wool leggings or opaque tights under jeans or a dress helps keep your legs warm without sacrificing style. No more shivering legs!
To be comfortable on any occasion: Whether running a marathon, performing yoga postures, or simply relaxing at home, cotton leggings and tights offer absolute comfort. They do not compress and allow the skin to breathe.
To follow the latest fashion trends: Animal prints, tie-dye, color blocking, lamé... Each season brings a new array of trendy leggings and tights to add a twist to your outfits. Enough to have fun and avoid boredom!

How to Put on Tights
Preparing to Put on Tights
Choose the right size of tights. The most important step in putting on tights is to start with the correct size. Otherwise, you'll have trouble no matter how you try to get them on. Tights are often sized according to weight and height. Check the packaging to determine which size matches your weight and height range. If you are uncomfortable with tights that are too tight, consider moving up one size; they will still fit well enough to stay around your waist. If you are taller than average or have longer legs, choose a size marked "tall." If your measurements fall between sizes, always choose the larger one.
Prepare your hands and feet. Once your tights get a tear, they are essentially useless. Ensure you aren't wearing jewelry that could snag the material. Buff any rough edges from your fingernails, toenails, hands, and feet.
Remove packaging from your new tights. Unfold your tights carefully and take out any cardboard backing tucked inside. To avoid accidentally tearing the tights, gently fold the cardboard in half to ease it out from the top of the tights.
Stretch the tights gently lengthwise. Stretch enough to create some give in the tights before you start putting them on. Be careful not to pull too hard and risk tearing them.
Slipping Tights Onto Legs
Hold the tights in front of you. While sitting, hold them with the front facing forward. Check for tags inside the waistband that indicate the back.
Gather one leg of your tights to the toe. Starting on either the right or left side, hold the waist of the tights and gently bunch the leg, gathering the fabric until the inside of the toe is exposed. Be careful—Your fingernail could snag the tights, or they could get a run if you pull too hard.
Ease the foot of the tights over your foot, from toe to heel. Point your toe and slip your foot inside the tights. Ensure the seam at the toe runs across the tip of your toes and that the foot of the tights fits nicely around your toe and heel. Keep your thumbs inside, pointed downward and with the nail side against you to avoid snagging your tights. You may need to stretch the opening slightly to ensure your foot slides in easily.
Pull the tights up your leg. Gently stretch the material and unroll it up your leg to above your knee, near your mid-thigh. Ease it on carefully so the fabric doesn't pull or rip. If the fabric is twisted or bunched at the knees, straighten it before proceeding. Repeat these steps to pull the tights up your other leg.
Completing Your Look
Pull up the tights. Once you've partially pulled the tights up each leg, stand up and continue gently unrolling the material. Pull the tights up until the waistband is positioned around your natural waistline. Pull the material up on one side, then the other, before finishing with the hips and waist. If any areas are rumpled or baggy, roll the tights down to the knees again, sit down, gently stretch them out, and roll them back up.
Make necessary adjustments. Check for areas where the tights are bunched or where your skin feels pinched. Your tights should feel snug but not uncomfortable. If you see a twisted area, it's best to take them off and repeat the process more carefully. Use the flats of your hands to adjust any wrinkles.
Perfect your pattern. If you're wearing patterned or seamed tights, ensure the design is appropriately placed on your legs. Consider putting on a pair of rubber gloves to make small adjustments for a flawless finish instead of pinching the tights with your fingers, which risks tearing.
When You Need Some Warmth
Tights are available in different denier levels, meaning there are various thicknesses and coverage options. The higher the denier, the thicker and more opaque the tights become, providing your legs with more warmth. This makes them perfect as undergarments in cold weather.
When You Want to Show Off Your Shapely Legs
Although going bare-legged is the simplest way to showcase your legs, wearing tights can make them look more shapely. Tights are designed to hug your legs nicely, enhancing your natural curves and giving them a more elegant and elongated appearance. To flaunt your legs while wearing tights, choose a pair with a low denier that closely matches your skin tone. Sheer hose gives the illusion that your legs are bare while providing the desired compression.
When You’re Wearing Certain Types of Footwear
Pointed-toe pumps, sky-high stilettos, and boots are stylish options that many women love. These shoes can be incorporated into a variety of outfits and offer professional, chic, or classic touches. However, they can become uncomfortable after several hours of wear, potentially leading to blisters and calluses as your skin rubs against the inner material.
When You Have to Conceal Leg Imperfections
If cosmetic imperfections on your legs prevent you from wearing short skirts, dresses, or shorts, tights can help you gain the confidence to wear what you want. The right pair of tights can cover up scratch marks, varicose veins, scars, and even cellulite. While it's perfectly normal to have these features, some people may feel self-conscious about them. Instead of being limited to pants, you can wear opaque tights to keep your legs covered while exploring other clothing options. This way, you can expand your wardrobe and feel good about how you look without exposing your legs.
When You Want to Add Visual Interest to Your Outfit
Black, gray, and skin-tone tights are known for their versatility. Due to their neutral colors, these tights can be easily integrated into various styles and are accepted in professional settings like the office. However, tights also come in many different colors and designs. They can be neon-colored, feature complex patterns, or have eye-catching prints. These types of tights are perfect for elevating a plain outfit. For example, if you’re wearing an all-black ensemble, purple or yellow tights can brighten your look. If your short dress feels a bit plain, tights with interesting patterns such as plaid, polka dots, or hearts can add unique flair.
When You Need That Finishing Touch
Some days, you may feel that your outfit is missing something. No matter which accessory you try on, it may not make your look feel complete. In times when you need that finishing touch, consider wearing tights. They add formality and elegance, making you look dressed up for any occasion.
How to Care for Your Tights to Make Them Last Longer
Hand Wash with Care
Hand washing is the gentlest method to clean your tights, preserving their elasticity and shape.
●How to Wash:
Step 1: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
Step 2: Gently swirl your tights in the water, being careful not to rub or wring them.
Step 3: Rinse thoroughly with cool water until all detergent is removed.
Step 4: Press out excess water by pressing your tights between two towels. Avoid wringing or twisting.
Use a Mesh Laundry Bag
If you must use a washing machine, always place your tights in a mesh laundry bag to protect them from snags and tangles.
●How to Wash:
Step 1: Place your tights in a mesh laundry bag.
Step 2: Use the gentle or delicate cycle on your washing machine with cold water.
Step 3: Use a mild detergent and avoid using fabric softeners, which can weaken the fibers.
Avoid Heat
High temperatures can damage the elasticity of your tights, causing them to lose their shape.
●How to Dry:
Step 1: After washing, lay your tights flat on a clean, dry towel.
Step 2: Roll the towel to press out excess water, then reshape your tights.
Step 3: Lay your tights flat to air dry, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Store Properly
Proper storage can prevent snags, runs, and tangles, keeping your tights in top condition.
●How to Store:
Step 1: Fold your tights carefully instead of balling them up.
Step 2: Store them in a designated drawer or container, away from sharp objects that could cause snags.
Step 3: Consider using tissue paper to separate and protect delicate pairs.
Handle with Care
Handling your tights with care when putting them on and taking them off can prevent unnecessary damage.
●How to Handle:
Step 1: Remove jewelry and ensure your nails are smooth to avoid snags.
Step 2: Roll your tights down to the toes and gently ease them on, being careful not to pull too hard.
Step 3: Adjust them gradually up your legs, ensuring even distribution of fabric.
Rotate Your Pairs
Rotating your tights regularly can extend their lifespan by reducing wear and tear on a single pair.
●How to Rotate:
Step 1: Keep several pairs of your favorite tights in rotation.
Step 2: Alternate between pairs to give each one time to recover its shape and elasticity between wears.
Step 3: Invest in multiple styles to match different outfits and occasions.
Prevent Runs Before They Start
Preventing runs and snags from occurring in the first place can save your tights and keep them looking new longer.
●How to Prevent:
Step 1: Apply a small amount of clear, non-greasy hairspray to your tights before wearing. This helps reinforce the fibers and prevent runs.
Step 2: Be mindful of your environment. Avoid rough surfaces and be cautious when sitting or moving around.
Step 3: Keep an emergency pair of tights in your bag for quick changes if needed.
