What Is Stocking
Stockings which are also known as hosiery, or hose, and popularly as "Nylons", are coverings for legs and feet.
Types of Stockings
Sheer Stockings
These stockings are made from lightweight, translucent material, providing a subtle and elegant look. They are great for adding a touch of sophistication to your outfit.
Opaque Stockings
Opaque stockings are thicker and less transparent than sheer ones. They provide more coverage and are perfect for cooler weather or when you want a more substantial look.
Patterned Stockings
Add a dash of flair to your ensemble with stockings featuring various patterns such as polka dots, stripes, or floral designs. These are an excellent choice for those looking to make a fashion statement.
Seamed Stockings
Seamed stockings have a visible seam running down the back, creating a classic, vintage-inspired look. They are often associated with old Hollywood glamour and are some of my favorites!
Fishnet Stockings
Known for their open, diamond-shaped pattern, fishnet stockings are a bold and edgy choice. They can add a touch of rebellion to your outfit, especially when paired with leather or denim. If you want to add a little spice, a fun fishnet or even something with a pattern is also nice to have, but it’s not strictly necessary.
Thigh-High Stockings
Thigh-high stockings extend up to the thigh without needing a garter belt. They can be a sexy and practical option, often featuring a silicone band at the top to prevent slipping. If you don’t want them to wear like pants and feel restricted, these might be for you!
Colored Stockings
If you want to add a pop of color to your outfit, consider colored stockings. They come in various hues and can be a playful and eye-catching addition to your look.
Matte Stockings
Matte stockings have a non-shiny finish, providing a more subtle and muted appearance than the glossy finish of some other types. They can be an excellent option for a sophisticated look.
9 Ways to Style Stockings
Opaque Stockings
Opaque stockings are on trend these days, and you can find them in any color. Don’t you think stockings go well with any outfit? Add classic black tights to your structured romper and a turtleneck to achieve this edgy look. It works great for really short dresses, skirts, and shorts.
Sheer Stockings
Sheer stockings look best in black or very see-through nude. You can wear nude stockings if you want to create a clean look. Nude stockings are a great choice for formal wear under pencil skirts and shift dresses, while black stockings pair better with winter outfits.
Edgy Fishnets
If you want to amp up the sex appeal of your outfit, you can never go wrong with fishnet stockings. Create an edgy, punk look by styling fishnet stockings with distressed jeans or pairing them with a bodycon dress for your Friday night clubbing scenes.
Textured Stockings
Floral patterns and embellishments are very much in trend right now, and you may want to incorporate this into your stockings as well. Using patterned stockings can sometimes look wrong or overly attention-grabbing. If you like patterns, stick to subtle designs in one color. Make sure that the pattern blends in with your outfit; it can look great when paired with cool high heels. When wearing patterned stockings, choose solid-colored outfits.
Polka Dot Stockings
Make it quirky with spotty stockings. These classic polka-dotted stockings can be paired with maxis, camisole dresses, and even long skirts. Complement these stockings with a pair of high heels, and you’re ready to steal everyone’s heart.
White is the New Black
Although black is known as the go-to color for stockings, white can be just as chic and far more authentic. Another bonus: they can make your colored shoes really pop, like a marquise diamond.
Add Some Sparkle
Fishnets often have a grunge vibe on the catwalk. However, these stockings can receive a girly update by adding sparkly embellishments. These would work well for a special occasion—pair them with a champagne satin slip dress and dainty heels.
Embrace Lace
Lace detailing is a classy way to elevate your outfit. Lace stockings can add texture to your look and inject a bit of attitude in a way that bare legs cannot.
Ripped Stockings
There’s nothing worse than pulling on a brand-new pair of stockings only to rip them seconds later. This delicate fabric has caused us plenty of grief over the years. No matter how careful we are, rips seem inevitable. However, we’ve picked up some useful hacks to extend the longevity of our tights, thanks to a lifelong process of trial and error.
Wearing
Most hosiery, especially sheer or low-denier types, is quite delicate. That doesn’t mean it should only be saved for special occasions; If you follow the steps below, you can wear nice hosiery every day without ruining it (remember to wash between wears!).
Wear Gloves: Not all day, of course, but when you’re putting your hosiery on or taking it off. I’ve ruined countless pairs of stockings on a ring or nail that I didn’t know was broken until there was a big hole in my brand-new hosiery. Any soft, smooth gloves will work—Satin, cotton, and so on.
Put Them On Properly: Avoid pulling on the fabric as much as possible, as this can stretch the stockings out of shape. Bunch them up (with those gloves on!) until you get to the toe, then put that on, ensuring the seam at the toe is straight. Slowly pull them all the way up. If you find they need to be higher, don’t just yank the top; unroll them down to the knee and then back up, pulling a little more on the fabric this time.
Take Them Off Properly: To take your hosiery off, simply do the opposite of putting them on—Start at the top and roll them down gently without pulling. While a burlesque stocking peel might look cool, don’t do it unless you don’t mind stretching them out!
Wear Slippers: One of the first places to wear out hosiery is the underside of the foot, since you’re walking on them all day. Ill-fitting shoes that rub can create thin patches in your hosiery, and not wearing shoes is just as bad. At home, you should wear slippers if you’re not wearing shoes to keep your tights or stockings in good condition. Oh, and get a pedicure—Your toenails can catch on stockings just like fingernails!

Washing
No matter how well you take care of your tights or stockings while wearing them, you can ruin them in just one wash. I used to think my sheer pairs of stockings developed pulls because they were low quality or old, but it turns out I wasn’t washing them correctly. Even the most delicate, regularly worn stockings can last for many months if washed properly, including cheaper ones.
Hand Wash: I hand-wash all my lingerie, and I recommend you do too, but if you only wash one thing by hand, let it be your hosiery. The fabric is too delicate for machine washing. If you absolutely must use a washing machine, place them inside a lingerie wash bag to prevent buttons or hooks from snagging, and wash them on the ‘hand wash’ or delicate setting. However, it’s still not as good as spending a couple of minutes washing them yourself.
Don’t Wring Them: Once washed, don’t wring the water out, as this overstretches the fabric. Instead, just squeeze them gently. The fabric is so fine that it’ll dry quickly when laid out over a clothes horse, so it doesn’t matter if they’re still a bit damp when you leave them to dry.
Don’t Tumble Dry: If a washing machine is bad, then a tumble dryer is terrible for hosiery. It’s especially damaging to hosiery with elastic and to hold-ups with silicone tops. After just a couple of tumble dries, that stretch is gone, and your stay-ups become don’t-stay-ups. Some natural hosiery fabrics like silk or wool can become completely misshapen due to the heat of a tumble dryer as well.
Storage
Last but not least, you need to care for your hosiery even when it’s sitting at the back of your drawer!
Store Separately: Your hosiery should be stored separately from your other lingerie, as bra hooks and decorative adornments can catch the fabric and cause small pulls that will eventually become large ones or ladders. I keep all my hosiery in clear, resealable plastic bags, but a soft bag, tissue-paper lined box, or a drawer to themselves will work too.
Fold Them Neatly: A few years back, with about thirty pairs of black stockings of different deniers and designs, I thought it would be a good idea to tie matching stockings together for easy pairing. It turns out that even loosely tied can stretch the fabric, so it’s much better to fold them up neatly.

How Do I Avoid Ripping My Stockings?
Make sure that you have the right fit; If they are too tight or short, they’ll be more prone to ripping. Follow the sizing guide on the side.
Choose a fabric that’s slightly thicker and/or more opaque (avoid anything too airy that feels like you could rip it apart with a thought).
Look for hosiery with reinforced toe, heel, thigh, and crotch regions (a Cuban heel with a contrast stripe running up the back can actually be a neat fashion accent in addition to being functional).
Take the time to put your stockings on carefully. Ensure your nails are smooth, roll the leg of your hose into a bunch down by the toe, carefully place your foot into it, and roll up evenly.
Be mindful of crossing your legs and where you sit or rest. If you tend to kick your inside ankle or leg while walking, wear shoes that don’t have many straps, buckles, or other pointy things that can catch.
